The Kopotakkho River is an important river in the southwestern part of Bangladesh, originating from the Mathabhanga River in Chuadanga district. It flows through Jhenaidah, Jessore, Satkhira, and Khulna districts. This river is one of the major rivers in the Khulna division, with a length of approximately 238 kilometers. However, the river is currently in a dying state due to several factors, including destructive activities by local people, sedimentation that fills its course, and encroachment on its banks.
SBK Union, located in the Maheshpur Upazila of Jhenaidah District in the Khulna division, lies along the banks of the Kopotakkho River. This union is known for its natural beauty, agriculture-driven lifestyle, and cultural heritage. The river plays an integral role in the daily life of the residents of SBK Union, contributing significantly to agriculture, fisheries, and transportation systems.
However, the current state of the river has become a challenge for the people of SBK Union. The diminishing water levels, sediment accumulation, and increased pollution have negatively impacted agricultural production and fish farming. The farmers of SBK Union depend on the river’s water for irrigation and fish farming, but the deteriorating condition of the river has put their livelihoods at risk.
To address this situation, the government has initiated dredging and river restoration projects. Additionally, raising awareness among the local population and ensuring their active participation in river conservation are crucial. If the people of SBK Union unite in preserving the river, the condition of the Kopotakkho River can improve, bringing positive changes to their way of life.
The Kopotakkho River is an inseparable part of life in SBK Union. To improve the current state of the river, active participation from the local population, along with government initiatives, is essential. Collective efforts in river conservation will contribute to the development of SBK Union and improve the lives of its people.
