Food Assistance to the Poor (VGF)
VGF is a humanitarian aid program through which the government distributes food among poor families. The VGF program provides food grains to the people affected by natural disasters.
The purpose of this program is to reduce the poverty of poor families.
(1) to ensure food security to mitigate the disaster risk of the poor and destitute people;
(Ii) prevention of diseases of afflicted people and children;
(3) providing food to the unemployed during the recession;
(4) To contribute to the alleviation of poverty through temporary assistance to the beneficiaries, especially for the socio-economic development of the extremely poor.
Beneficiaries of this program are-
(1) a landless person who has no land other than his homestead;
(2) poor and extremely poor individuals/families, who usually cannot afford 2 meals a day;
(3) persons/families affected by natural calamities, who are in acute food and financial crisis;
(4) individuals/families who cannot afford food for unemployment;
(5) very poor persons/families, who are engaged in special occupations and who need to be kept away from their occupations in the public interest;
(6) Primary school-going children who are suffering from malnutrition.
The Department of Disaster Management receives annual foodgrain allocation from the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief in two installments. The Department of Disaster Management again made sub-allocations in favor of the Deputy Commissioner considering the population and poverty line of the specified Upazila for distribution of these food grains among the eligible beneficiaries.
